Rasmus Kloster Bro – Not a word

The work with film language materials is examined through a development based on video sketches, up to the production of a feature film. With a focus on what cannot be described in words, a method is sought to compliment or make the script redundant, as a prerequisite for the cinematic. New technology is being experimented with and in-between media are pointed out which can maintain and strengthen the purely cinematic qualities.

Period: 1 March 2022 – 31 December 2023

The project investigates cinematic form and non-verbal qualities in the transition between the development and the production of a narrative feature film, which stems from a basic work with video sketching.
The project documents and contextualises key parts of an established artistic practice, which is also affected in the maturation project 'Video sketches as a basic artistic work tool'. The maturing project dealt with a methodical approach to form in the initiating phase, while this project looks at a methodical approach to form in the further development, towards a well-worked sketch-based aesthetic, a narrative, and the encounter with a production reality.

The project's fields of knowledge are the film director's artistic method for working with cinematic material and have particular relevance for script development. The project is situated in a Danish/European arthouse feature film context, where collaboration with a consultant at a film institute and international funding sources play a major role. Therefore, the project also affects artistic management, both in creative collaborations and in the formal and financial framework, especially in terms of development and pre-production. The artistic method is developed in parallel with a feature film created for a cinema room and audience but has relevance for all media and formats where cinematic idiom is used.
